You may well have seen promotion surrounding our Lunchtime Lightning Talks but have you really considered the positives that could come from participating in them?
Our founder, Barry Cranford recently caught up with a few of the regular LJC speakers – here’s what they had to say.
It could open up doors that you never knew existed
Whether you are open to a new opportunity or want to stay with your current employer – speaking can put you on the map. You will become instantly more visible in the community, which could well lead to you being known as someone that others want to work with. Recruiters will get to know you and will be in touch with opportunities when they arise.
If you want to stay where you are, speaking will make you more visible to leadership – and could well lead to promotions or pay rises.
You never know who you might meet
Imagine speaking about something you’re passionate about. Then imagine that afterwards someone approaches you to tell you that they are passionate about the same thing too. Wouldn’t that be an incredible feeling? Plus, who knows what you and your new-found friend could go on to achieve together or what other opportunities could open up, just because you spoke about a subject.
You’ll develop lots of skills
Speaking doesn’t only help develop communication skills – it can help in so many other areas too. When you are preparing a presentation, you need to truly understand your subject matter, so you’ll be consolidating that learning. In fact, some seasoned speakers include delivering a presentation as part of their learning plan when they want to learn something new. To truly explain an idea to others you will also need to perfect your writing and content creation skills – speaking helps you grow in so many ways.
You can have an impact on the industry
One of the really great things about the tech industry is that it is young. This means that there is still time to influence it and to make an impact. If you feel strongly about something – whether it’s something that you feel is wrong within the industry or something that you would like to promote, getting your ideas out through speaking can galvanise others into action and drive change.
Conferences are fun
Speaking can make attending conferences even more fun. Firstly, people will know you and will most likely want to speak to you – you certainly won’t need to worry about how to approach people. Secondly, you will more than likely be able to attend for free. If you represent your employer – they might even cover your transport and overnight costs.
We’re holding regular ‘Lunchtime Lightning Talks’ sessions to give people in the community the chance to test out their speaking skills in a relaxed and nurturing environment. Why not come along to one and see what it’s all about?
